Cate Blanchett opens up on ageism and sexism in Hollywood

Cate Blanchett, who plays a key role in the upcoming Steven Soderbergh directorial Black Bag, opposite Michael Fassbender, recently shared her thoughts about ageism, female agency, and sexism in Hollywood. Speaking to Business Insider, Blanchett stated that, at the start of her career, female actors stayed relevant in the industry for around five years.

However, the Academy Award-winning actor reckons that there is more agency to female producers today. "There’s more females in the writing room, and the more diverse the industry is at base level, when things are developed, the more exciting it is for audiences," stated Blanchett.

The actor added that ageism and sexism in Hollywood manifest in a way that makes these more noticeable to the public as compared to other industries. "We’re a very public-facing industry," she said.

Blanchett is among the many actors to voice out against prejudice or discrimination based on one's age or sex in Hollywood, including Glenn Close, Kirsten Dunst, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
